Soccer Silent Sidelines 5/18 & 5/19
by posted 05/16/2013

A message from the CT Junior Soccer Association:

Each playing season, CJSA shall sponsor a statewide Silent Sidelines weekend. Coaches will be permitted to give players direction from the sidelines. Spectators will be directed to refrain from making any comments to players, coaches or referees, but will be permitted to applaud efforts by players.

The goals of Silent Sidelines Weekend are to:

1. develop our players to make decisions on the field without sideline intervention.
2. improve the players’ communication on the field by reducing the outside noise level.
3. support our youth referees by eliminating dissension from the sidelines.

We are requesting that all spectators remain silent on these weekends. For the sake of our kids, we are asking for one weekend where we stand back and just let the players play. We would like to provide each player at least one game of their season that is free of the distractions caused by spectators screaming and yelling at them.

The guidelines are simple. Spectators are to be quiet, talking in a normal tone to the person next to them. What is to be avoided are comments that can be heard by players, referees or opponents. Applause is permitted and encouraged.

The program works. It has increased the awareness by both coaches and parents of the players’ development. In addition, it has increased referee retention.
Your help is needed. We are asking everyone in CJSA to promote and support Silent Sidelines Weekend and give the game back to the kids.

A mother was making a breakfast of fried eggs for her teenage son. Suddenly the boy bursts into the kitchen.
"Careful! Careful! Put in some more butter! Oh my goodness! You're cooking too many at once. TOO MANY! Turn them! TURN THEM NOW! We need more butter. Oh my! WHERE are we going to get MORE BUTTER? They're going to STICK! Careful!... CAREFUL! I said CAREFUL! You NEVER listen to me when you're cooking! Never! Turn them! Hurry up! Are you crazy? Have you lost your mind? Don't forget to salt them. You know you always forget to salt them. Use the salt. USE THE SALT! THE SALT!"
The mother stared at him. "What's wrong with you? You think I don't now how to fry a couple of eggs?"
The son calmly replied, "I just wanted to show you what it feels like when I'm trying to play soccer."

Summer Goalkeeper camp
by posted 05/07/2013

We are fast approaching Summer, and its that time of year when goalkeeping gets put on the back burner. Keeperstop is trying to keep all local goalkeepers in shape for the Fall season by offering Summer goalkeeper clinics throughout CT, MA and NY.

In CT keeperstop has 2 clinics lined up, at Loomis Chaffee in Windsor and another at Kingswood Oxford School in West Hartford.

This is a great opportunity for MSC goalkeepers to be trained by highly qualified coaches from Division 1 Universities and professional soccer clubs.

Current MSC referee highlighted in Hartford Courant
by posted 04/29/2013

Sarah Gillespie was highlighted in the Hartford Courant:

http://www.courant.com/sports/high-schools/hc-girls-track-player-20130425,0,6423812.story

Northwest's Sarah Gillespie: One Runner To Remember

ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Completed one of the best Connecticut girls indoor careers of the last 15 years by finishing fifth in the mile in the New Balance Indoor Nationals (4:52.53) to secure All-American status. ... Won the New England Championship in the mile (4:55.37) and the State Open title (4:56.80), just missing Meghan Owen of Killingly's 11-year State Open record of 4:56.66. ... Pulled off an impressive sweep of the 1,000, 1,600 and 3,200 meters at the Class S championship to lift her team to a fourth-place finish. She ran 3:01.81 in the 1,000, 5:04.70 in the 1,600 and 11:12.78 in the 3,200 meters. ... Ran 4:57.43 in the mile at the Millrose Games to place eighth ... The CCC champion in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:59.96. ... Finished indoor track career with state records in the 800 meters (2:11.16) and 1,000 meters (2:51.31). She also has the State Open record in the 1,000 meters (2:53.01), and Class S records in the 1,000 and 1,600 meters (2:55.95 and 4:58.32).
GILLESPIE SAID: "There have been lots of miles and really great friends. You can meet someone and hit it off with them but there's nothing like going for a run with them. I've met a lot of people and I think it has really, really changed me and taught me to do the hard thing. You don't get anywhere unless you put in hard work and I think I've really learned to attack everything step-by-step just like running."
WILLIAMSON SAID: "People are always going to remember her name around here. I don't see how they could forget. ... She tries really hard and she really cares. I'm going to think about her times and victories, of course, but that is going to be a little further down on the list because I'm just excited to see what she is going to achieve in college and afterward in and outside the sport. I have no doubt that whatever she choses to do she will do it well and achieve her goals.”
UP NEXT: Will look to chase more records and lower her time in the mile this outdoor track season before heading to Harvard this fall, where she will run and study biology.
IN 10 YEARS: Hopefully a physician's assistant, still running and writing.
MISCELLANEOUS: Plans to go into medical school after graduating from Harvard. ... Part of campus ministry, French Honor society and National Honor society. ... Loves studying French and hopes to study it at Harvard, too. ... Went to a camp last year where she observed and helped medical professionals who were assisting migrant workers. ... Loves to read and write, and has written two novels. ... Was also the 2012 All-Courant girls indoor track athlete of the year.

Former MSC player Sara Nagle a standout
by posted 04/12/2013

Sara Nagle was recognized this week in the Hartford Courant. Article below:

Manchester High School's Sara Nagle A Soccer Standout At Stonehill
After Great Career In College, Next Stop Is New Career As Police Officer

Sara Nagle never missed a minute in four years of playing soccer at Stonehill College.

Nagle, 21, played through injuries, such as a separated shoulder, and as a senior defensive center back was instrumental in the college's setting the record for the fewest goals allowed in a single season in 2012.

Nagle, of Manchester, has been playing soccer since she was 5. With her playing career finished, Nagle will move on to her new career as a police officer. Recently hired by the West Hartford Police Department, Nagle began the five-month-long police academy on Friday.

Her former soccer coaches both said that it takes a special kind of person to play soccer the way she did. "It's a combination of having a good read on the game and good anticipation," said Jon Cohn, Nagle's soccer coach at Manchester High School.

"She clearly had all that. It also is a function of taking it personally. A good defender refuses to get beat." For four years Nagle played defense alongside Allison Nagle. The two share no relation, but watching them play it might have appeared otherwise.

"She never came out of the field in her four years at Stonehill," said Rolando Lopes, the women's soccer coach at Stonehill. "She anchored our defense. She's a great competitor." The most decorated women's soccer player at Stonehill, Nagle said she is most proud of the way she and her teammates played defense this past season.

"We would take it personally if someone scored," Nagle said. "We would get mad. Let's not let it happen again."

Nagle spent the last four summers giving back to her high school program. She filled the role of volunteer coach during the girl's soccer team's summer season.

"The summer league is a really great thing," Nagle said. "It helped me so much to apply what I learned. It was all around a lot of fun."
Cohn said that Nagle took full advantage of her time with the students.

"Not only could she bring her soccer knowledge to the game, but she could be a role model to the players," Cohn said. "She's just as good a person as I've ever coached." One thing that's certain is that Lopes is going to have a tough time replacing Nagle on his team's defensive line next season. "It's big shoes to fill by anyone," Lopes said. "She's definitely one of the best, and one as a coach you remember forever."
